This dvd has outstanding stellar images with great music in the style of Enya. I have it in the background in my kitchen.

This DVD is the first volume of two volume set released in 2000 showing the marvelous lights in the mysterious heaven. There are 10 chapters with a total view time of about 60 minutes. It has pictures of beautiful lights that correspond to gas clouds (mainly hydrogen) of nebulas, the nurseries for star formation, clusters of galaxies, clusters of stars, stars in various stages of life (young blue stars, dying red giants), binaries (two stars interacting with one another), supernova (giant stars facing violent death producing spectacular light phenomenon), quasars, pulsars and planetary nebula. The well known supernova 1987A is also in this DVD. Some of the stars and galaxies show fine structure (sheets of light in various colors due to reflecting light/solar wind from the supernova or massive stars in the neighborhood) is simply breathtaking. The Eagle nebula showing huge pillars of gas and intergalactic dust showing the birth of stars is wonderful. Trifid nebula with an array of lights has strong stellar activity, and planets are ubiquitous. There are pictures of very early galaxies, about 12 billion years old (the universe is 13.7 billion years old). Abel 221 another deep field galaxy of early universe shows spectacular gravitational lensing that help in the detection of remote galaxies because of magnification. Galaxies which are on the edge of the universe are les than one billion year old are too dim to see through the eyes of Hubble. Some of the pictures of galaxy clusters show about 1000 galaxies. There are also some beautiful pictures of two galaxies colliding, and the after effects of collisions with beautiful lights and the arms. The fine structures are simply great, and galaxies in various stages of evolution during the early times of the universe are very nice. Crab nebula with crab pulsar looks spectacular.
The last chapter deals with other planetary system in solar system. The comet Schumacher- Levy 9 that hit Jupiter and the aftermath of the collision shows the violent nature of big object collisions. The moons of Saturn and its shadow on the planet looks beautiful as well as the planetary turbulence (storm) in the northern pole of Mars.
One word of advise is when you are watching this for the first time, right click on the screen and the set the audio to 4 (total seven audio options) which gives you the background voice presenting the video of Hubble's pictures. The first three options give only the background music which is also melodious and soothing. Under subtitle options (total 8), choose subtitle 1 that also shows the subtitles if you like to read them while watching the DVD. The subtitles also have options for French, German and Spanish. There is also another option to bookmark or capture the image which you can save as screen savers; there are some good images to capture. The first three chapters are about astronomers like Hubble and telescopes and the cameras used in taking pictures. The Hubble control is at the NASA Goddard space center in Greenbelt, Maryland

This display of the Hubble space telescope's work is changing the way people feel and think. Everyone I have watched this display with expressed some form of changed emotions from joy, to loneliness, to despair. As for the young, the question becomes one of why we cannot go there. Thus, the quest for knowledge of the universe continues. I am a science teacher and regard this disc as a must have.

If you have any interest in what "is out there" in outer space this is a film you can not miss. When we watched it we watched it twice in a row. This film is truely breathtaking. Watch it without the sound at least once so you can comment on the pictures.

i was surprized that no commentory or subtitle to tell me what i am watching. may be it was my mistake that i didnt pay attention to the describtion of the disc content. but be careful.. it is exactly as the title says.. just a stargaze with some music :(
