My son's school has a new music director and principle. To say the least we invested money in a sax and school lessons are lacking. My son has learned more from the first session in this video then in the first 5 weeks at school meeting twice a week. You need to understand his class has 25 students representing 6 instruments and is 40 minutes long. If you do the math, that is not a lot of learning time. Even I was able to play after watching the lesson (former Trumpet player). Keep in mind this is for someone not knowing anything about the sax but is an excellent starting place or as a supplement to school lessons.
Good DVD for beginners.

I got a few of these beginners DVD's and this was by far the best.
There's another one called "Play Alto Sax" and that was decent too for the money... although it's only 25 mins long; it was presented more professionally than this Ultimate Beginner one which is 60 mins long.
I'd say definitely get both - they're both good. Make sure you don't waste your money on the one called Essential Elements 2000 (book + DVD) because it's really very bad.

If you are looking for a beginners guide on the Saxophone, then this is the right book for you. It has very detailed information from assembling the instrument, cleaning, maintenance, and playing techniques. Excellent DVD! Highly recommended. The only problem is that it's only one hour long. :) If I find a second volume I'll buy it.
