A RUSSIAN PERSPECTIVE OF AFGHAN WAR -- SHOULD WE TAKE NOTICE? September 6, 2010 Robin Simmons (Palm Springs area, CA United States) Probably not destined for wide awareness on the home theater scene, this major Russian film is the first to dramatize the Afghanistan-Russian war with the kind of intensity PLATOON had for Vietnam. This was the highest grossing Russian film of 2005 ($27 million) and won their best film award. Ferocious battles are brutally realistic depicting events during the final year of Soviet occupation. Lots of fictionalizing from real events as we follow a bunch of green recruits into combat. What's the main point of this film besides a Russian POV? Is it that the recruits who fought and died in fierce and bloody battle aren't forgotten? Or that they didn't fight in vein (even though history suggests otherwise)?
For me, what's especially strange and disturbing is that now "we" are in Afghanistan - and have been for nine years as of this writing. It's our longest war! Yet the Taliban are gaining power in the remote provinces with their radical "religion" of repression (with stoning for moral offenses). And perhaps worse, Al Qaeda allegedly now gets weapons from Russia!
9TH COMPANY Should Be Academy Award Contender September 6, 2010 Alex H. Taylor As a Marine that went to Vietnam after the French pulled out, I would like to respond to Thomas A. Maguire "TOM FILM"'s one star rating of the movie 9TH COMPANY. I am going to bet he is young, inexperienced with the world, and a bit opinionated about matters he knows nothing about. He states "One of the worst movies ever made.". This is just ludicrous! This film deserves respect for being earthy, honest and making no apologies for anything depicted on the screen. He states, "The dubbing in English makes this almost a comedy.". If he would step away from his video games for a minute he would know that the lip movement in Russian is way different to English and hasn't the same flow and rhythm. That is why the English speech you hear doesn't match the visual lip movement. The artists that added English dialog are to be congratulated. He goes on to say, "No plot, actors are horrible as is everything about the film.". This is a person who definitely didn't watch this film from start to finish and is intolerant to any form of film-making that doesn't fall into his videogame playing values. If this film had been made in the USA, I have no doubt it would easily win Academy Awards. He states evan further, "The highest grossing movie in Soviet history? You've got to be kidding. Filmed in 2005, released in 2010. Whats up?". Again showing his inexperience... he doesn't realize how much time and effort is required to translate the dialog/soundtrack and get permissions/releases from foreign countries. He makes one last statement that I can some-what agree with, "Don't waste the dollar at redbox!". I agree... get this movie on Blue-ray, (or at least DVD) you won't be disappointed. As a last resort use RedBox and enjoy one hard hitting, in your face, earthy imported movie that brings out the horrors of war in a truthful manor. (I have survived just such an encounter!) I would give this movie 10 stars out of 10 if I could. Don't listen to the Thomas A. Maguire's and "Megabee's one star ratings... they haven't a clue what their talking about!
Thank you,
Alex Taylor
Better than most. September 5, 2010 Satvic (Fairfield, Iowa, USA) It's hard to find good movies these days to watch, even less to collect. This movie definitely good for both.
If you liked "Platoon", "The Hurt Locker" you'll love this melodramatic action movie. It's definitely PG21 with explicit language, 1 sex scene not to mention bloody effects.
I didn't think it would take this film 5 years to make it around the world.
English subs leave you wishing more (that's why I corrected and uploaded a more "realistic" translation to the [...] few years ago). Although it's heavily "holywoodized", obviously aimed to satisfy western viewers, I'm still impressed with well rounded deliver of the story and the realism not to mention the reminder of what it could be like to send 17yr old kids to war.
don't waste your time August 31, 2010 Thomas A. Maguire (BOSTON) 0 out of 6 found this review helpful

You've got to be kidding. Filmed in 2005, released in 2010. Whats up?

How the 9th Company is understood in Russia June 3, 2010 Megabee 12 out of 30 found this review helpful
This film is not based on real events, it's based on Bondarchuck Jr's impressions of what was real. Significant portion of movie budget was spent on advertising and TV buzz, without which this movie would be a financial disaster. As a result, the movie is not well appreciated in Russia.
Many scenes in the movie are objectionable, and have little relation to how it was in real 9th company story. Several survivors from that battle were really disappointed and refused to acknowledge movie similarity to real events.
The main issue is that they knew that they were not forgotten, and help was on it's way, and the fierce fight was not futile. Every other lie in the film is simply eclipsed by this fact.
You should know this when watching 'The 9th Company'.
