COMPLETELY SATISFIED! August 27, 2010 Joan F. Johnston This miniseries is as close to being embedded with some of our military without the real gore. This war is not covered enough in our media to make people realize how horrific it is for the soldier's fighting it. The cinematography and acting is very realistic. It is a depiction everyone should be made aware of.
Reviewed by a Navy Vet August 20, 2010 E. Higuera (North Carolina, United States) Great series! I thought for the most part it was an accurate to what the modern day military. I thought the series did a good job of showing how a war scares a generation of a nation.

have not watched it yet but it came in a very short time in good condition
Generation Kill July 30, 2010 bedrdrea I became interested in this series after reading the best-selling book of the same title. The book was outstanding and HBO's 7-part video/TV series of "Generation Kill" wasn't far behind. Like the book, the videos follow an actual group (real persons are portrayed primarily by actors...but the protagonists are real none the less) of Force Recon Marines as they enter Iraq in March 2003 as a "point" unit until they reach Baghdad and points north. Although the Iraq war would change drastically in the next few years "Generation Kill" is an excellent chronicle of the earliest phases of that war and its subsequent impact on the Marines involved. As a Vietnam combat veteran I have to say that these young Marines are a lot smarter than we were overall in terms of their ability to cut through the BS and see things as they are. And, they are every part as brave. This video series (and the book) are a must see for anyone interested in military history, on the impact of war on young hearts and minds, and the idiocy and incompetence that have accompanied troops into battle since time began. Excellent job by HBO.
Good series! July 27, 2010 Bob A must watch for any war movie/series fan. I consider it the 'Band of Brothers' for the Iraq War. Although I am not a military veteran, it seems to touch upon many of the aspects of recent wartime, like friendly-fire, officers that shouldn't be officers, PTS, etc.
Acting is superb, esp James Ransone. HBO fans remember him from Ziggy in 'The Wire'. Make sure to pay attention when he goes on one of his philosophic rants!
Reasons it doesn't get 5-stars:
- When you first put in the DVD, you get tons of HBO preview stuff that you have to watch before you can access the main menu. Give yourself a good five minutes the first time you use the DVD.
- Didn't like the Director's commentary....they don't talk about the scene you are watching and what they were trying to communicate to the viewer; instead they just keep going on rants on how good the actors do, filming location, etc. and rarely get specific on the scene you are viewing.
- For the military novice, be prepared to be diluged with military-speak and abbreviations. Luckily, there is a 'dictionary' booklet inside the DVD case which helps, and the subtitling (even English) is an option. I found they would start talking about some abbreviation over and over and had to pause and look it up a lot.
