Centennial DVD September 3, 2010 N. L. Shipley (Powder Springs, GA) WOW! The viewing quality is great, and the content is as remembered from years earlier tv viewing. The cast was well chosen for this miniseries.
Western History At It's Best August 14, 2010 John Harkness (Graham, WA, US) If you have experienced Centennial, I do not need to talk to you - you know!
If you have not experienced the majesty, grandeur, and spectacle of Centennial, you have missed
what was, in my humble opinion, the very best mini-series and story every made for television.
It is a story of our ancestors, the very heart and soul of America, from Native American to Immigrant, from
soldier to settler. It is the story of where we have been, where we are, and where we may very well be heading.
The acting is superlative, the characters are unforgetable, and the scenery is breath-taking. It is true to the book. As a student of the American West, this amazing production does justice to history. Many names have been changed, but the story is the history of manifest destiny. We experience the interactions, both negative and positive, with Native American cultures, and watch the demise of a society in the name of manifest destiny. And, we are able to experience the one issue that continues to be the bane of each generation: Land Development or Land protection and conservation. Give yourself and your family the gift of Centennial and experience it as a family. Thank you Mr. Michener for this wonderful gift.
Good Gift for an Avid History or Western Frontier Fan August 11, 2010 Roxanne Mchenry (Montana) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I gave this set as a Christmas gift to someone who's an avid Western movie/tv lover (John Wayne, Bonanza)and it was a big hit. For the under 35 age-group who only know cable television, this miniseries may seem hokey or corny. But the stories are compelling for those of us that remember great mini-series on TV in the 70's like Roots and The Thornbirds--and watching some of the well-known TV actors like Richard Chamberlin (the king of the miniseries!), Robert Conrad and Andy Griffith, among others in this series, made for fun reminiscing about their own shows and movies we remembered.
Best Mini Series Ever July 27, 2010 Pineapple Princess This sweeping saga of the settling of the wild west is, in my opinion, the best mini series ever made. I've watched it numerous times over the years and it never disappoints. With the exception of Sally Kellerman, it is perfectly cast. And how can you not love Pasquinel, or Levi Zendt, or Potatoes Brumbaugh? James Michener creates such rich, full characters that they actually seem like real people. And the story is engaging. It has everything - romance, intrigue, murder, and history.
ITS GOOD IF YOU GET IT RIGHT July 23, 2010 W. R. Furnas The series itself is exceptional. The casting is excellent. And the presentation of history is good.
NEGATIVES; The quality control was lacking due to the fact that one of the DVDs was not readable. So, the set was replaced by Amazon. It likewise had a defective DVD. Therefore, I had to play russian roulette with the two sets to get one good set.
I purchased Centennial to watch Centennial; not the trailer trash at the beginning of the series.
After it is all said and done I am glad that I have the series.
