Good Show, Obsolete Box Set
October 25, 2008Shutter Maze (United States)
My So-Called Life was a good show. It portrayed teen angst well. It was melodramatic at times, but so much better than most of the stuff teenagers get. I think it's good that it ended when it did because it left viewers wanting more. And that's a positive thing. It was a slice of life. It's only appropriate that the show have a short run. I do think the finale could have used some work, though. I didn't like the cliffhanger ending. I don't think the mystery worked, mainly because it felt like the easy way out to leave it like that.
As for this box set, it served its purpose in 2002 and I appreciate that. In 2008, though, there is a more sophisticated DVD set out there, with special features and everything. It's cheaper too. This one is obsolete. Though I'm not sure if the other one has subtitles or not.
I gave this two stars because I would really advise fans to buy the new version. I only wish I had. It has special features and I imagine it must be packaged better. This one is big enough to hold two or three VHS tapes.
Havent seen such great writing and directing for a series in years....

This show is phenomenal! I was thirteen when the show ended and too young to understand the depth and brilliance of the show at the time but now in my mid twenties, I am able to appreciate it for all of its complexities and the innovative approach to discussing and revealing teenage thoughts, mid-life crises, homosexuality-- this show tackled it all. It's definitely not the show for the average joe, which is probably why it got cancelled way before its time. I watch it over and over again and learn something new or find something that I missed every time. This is the type of show you wish would return back to the small screen, but each member of the cast vital to the show's existence and the show would lose much of its effect if it was recast.... Amazing show, I wish there were 20 more episodes! Fantastic script, fantastic cast, fantastic memories. Thanks for the DVD! Amazing show! There is no other show like it and I will definitely pass on to my kids.

One of the gems of the 1990s...

One of the greatest shows that molded a generation...on DVD! I was just in Target and saw another box set of the series, but this was the first. We relived all the teen angst and all the agony of high school all over again in it's glory. Whether you get it here or anywhere, the full series of My So Called Life is an excellent series that takes an honest look at the life of high schoolers in the 1990s. (Sort of the anti-Saved By the Bell.)
You feel the joys and pain as though you were one of the characters

This show was able to bring me to tears, laughter and anger, right along with the characters. It is true I related to Angela when this show came out, and that may have prompted me to like it all the more. I think the adolescent years are full of confusion and doubt, and this show captures that beautifully. The lessons Angela and her peers learned, are lessons we all must learn, over and over again. Now I am 26 and I still wish they'd continued this show for many seasons.
Also, someone mentioned the way Claire Danes would cry as being annoying. I feel it is moving that she cries in a real way, not all pretty and fake. Claire Danes is still an amazing actress and one thing she is exceptionally good at is maintaining balance in her portrayal of characters. The deep sadness also gives way to pure joy. That is what life is all about.
